Nasatka Security Continues Phase III Life Cycle Barrier Replacement Program at Legislative Washington, D.C. Branch

CHICAGOSept. 10, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Nasatka Security CEO John Scolaro announced today that the company was recently awarded Phase III of a barrier replacement program entering its third year, totaling over 60 barriers and assets in our nation’s capital.

Scolaro stated, “It’s a very quick turnaround period with our government agency clients when dealing with a barrier life cycle replacement program so not to impede existing traffic flow and site security; for this particular client, our window from removal to replacement is 72 hours or less. Considering the complexity of such a monumental number of barriers in such a close proximity, it can be a stressful and daunting task; however, with over 44 years of experience, we do whatever it takes to make it happen within our short time period; quickly and safely.”

According to Scolaro, most perimeter security solution providers have a preventative maintenance program for traditional wedge plate barriers, bollards, nets, gates, fencing access control points and mobile barriers. For high-volume use with large facilities like government agencies, airports, nuclear facilities, ports and various other secure environments, there needs to be a lifecycle management program to ensure optimal functionality and the strict crash rating compliance.

The crash ratings were developed in 1985 (revised in 2003) by the DOS, and more recently, further developed by American Society for Testing Methods (ASTM). The product is given a specific test certification based on vehicle weight, speed and distance of penetration. Whether it’s traditional wedge plate barrier or bollard, a successful lifecycle management program will identify current and future infrastructure needs, identify potential issues, risks and constraints and will allow providers to successfully rationalize impacts of various courses of action to deliver the greatest good for safety and design for the infrastructure and overall perimeter security.

According to Scolaro, Nasatka Security has been providing perimeter security solutions in and around Washington, D.C. for dozens of government agencies since its inception in 1975. Non-disclosure agreements and DOS/DOD privacy policies keep many of the organizations private to ensure maximum protection for all Nasatka Security’s clients.

“If you are walking around our nation’s capital and happen to see a wedge and/or bollard barrier pop-up, it’s highly likely we had something to do with the installation, maintenance, and/or its lifecycle replacement history,” Scolaro added.

Nasatka Security and Apex Fabrication & Design Announce Merger at ISC West

LAS VEGAS, April 9, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Nasatka Security CEO John F. Scolaro and Pennsylvania-based Apex Fabrication & Design President Jim Smith Jr. announced their merger today.

Scolaro said, “When Founder Ralph Nasatka, Sr., a Korean War Veteran, founded the company 44 years ago, he started a lifelong business relationship with Jim Smith, Sr., and the Smith family business. After 9/11, Nasatka’s business grew very quickly, and Jim Jr. stepped up to handle our steel fabrication needs by launching Apex Fabrication & Design in 2003. We have done a great deal of business together over the years, ranging from mobile and permanent crash-rated barriers, to rapid prototyping and crash tests. By merging our businesses, we will be one of the very few full-service perimeter security companies with a global presence that manufactures all of its own products in the USA.”

Smith, a veteran engineer and fabrication specialist, grew up around the fabrication shop created by his father out of a central Pennsylvania farm house during the early 70s, when wood burning stoves were in demand due to the gas crisis. Nasatka was one of Smith’s distributors, and the two companies went on to form a relationship that produced some of the very first patented perimeter barrier systems in the world.

Apex President Jim Smith, Jr., said, “We have come a long way from the days of Ralph and my dad paving the way with rapid protypes and patented barriers that helped shape an industry. It’s a wonderful feeling to work with a group of people for so long and trust them with your livelihood. To be able to merge together and take everything to another level is very exciting, for all of us!”
Apex was founded in 2003 by Jim Smith, Jr., to serve the needs of the transportation infrastructure industry. Smith and his team provided parts, components, and assembly services to OEMs whose products shipped worldwide. The 60,000- sq.-ft. facility has 18 work stations and is an industry leader in the design and the manufacture of active and passive vehicle barriers used to protect valuable infrastructure and assets. In addition, Apex is an AISC-certified steel fabricator providing a broad scope of custom metal fabrication services. This includes highway sign structures manufactured under the stringent guidelines of PennDOT’s Bulletin 15, Maryland State Highway Administration, North Carolina Department of Transportation, and other bordering states.

For over 40 years, Nasatka Security has met the evolving needs for vehicle access and perimeter security. Long before 9/11 and the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security, Nasatka had been a global leader in the innovation, manufacturing, installation, and maintenance service of vehicular access control and perimeter security system solutions. Nasatka’s corporate offices are in Clinton, Maryland, with sales and service locations throughout the USA and in the Middle East.

Nasatka installed the first steel plate “wedge” barrier in the United States (J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington, D.C.) in 1975 and conducted the first DOS steel-plate barrier crash test in the United States in 1985. Nasatka’s positive countermeasures, including active vehicle barriers (AVB) and passive vehicle barriers (PVB), mitigate the potential damage and loss of life associated with unauthorized vehicle access, including vehicle-borne explosive devices, vehicle attacks on pedestrians, commercial theft, and accidental breaches of secured perimeters. Nasatka’s solutions are deployed at many of the most highly-secured sites in the world. Our solutions are designed primarily to control, detect, and where necessary, stop unauthorized vehicle and pedestrian threats.

“Nasatka’s business is a unique blend of physical and electronic security including crash-tested active and passive (fixed and mobile) vehicle and pedestrian barriers, bollards, and guard booths. Nasatka provides design-to-sustainment services to include: custom design engineering, general construction, and contractual 24/7 service and maintenance programs for thousands of physical security assets throughout the continental United States and around the world,” Scolaro said.

Nasatka Security Answers Spike in Demand with Robust Line of Bollards at GSX in Vegas

Las Vegas, Nev. – (September 28, 2018) – Nasatka Security featured their extensive line of fixed and retractable crash-rated bollards at the Global Security Exchange (GSX), formerly the Annual Seminar & Exhibits, in Las Vegas this week.

Nasatka CEO John Scolaro said, “In 1975, Founder Ralph Nasatka, a Korean War Veteran, developed original, patented design for his first American-made, K12 crash-tested steel plate wedge barrier, which was installed in the Washington, DC metro area. Today, Nasatka Security is an experienced global perimeter specialist manufacturing, installing and maintaining a wide variety of active and passive vehicle barriers all over the globe. This year at GSX we spoke more on our full line of crash-rated fixed, removable and retractable bollards.”

According to Scolaro, there has been a drastic increase in “soft targeting” crowds in public and common areas over the past few years and Nasatka has seen a dramatic increase in requests from architectural and engineering (A&E) firms, especially specification requests for large scale bollard implementations. The increase in interest in deep and shallow foundation fixed, removable and retractable bollards has been significant for sport stadiums, municipalities, corporate campuses, and large parks and recreation centers.

Many perimeter security companies only offer one or two types of fixed and retractable bollards. Nasatka has an extensive line of crash-rated bollard designs to assist A&E firms in designing perimeter security plans, especially for existing urban settings where underground utilities and other space challenges make crash-rated barrier and bollard foundations a challenge.

In addition to their core products of steel plate barriers, bollards, drop arms and sliding gates, Nasatka recently completed a large U. S. Army order of mobile barriers to enhance the security needs in various Middle East theatre regions and in support of Iraq Defense and Police security needs.

In the Washington D.C. region, Nasatka is actively upgrading perimeter security systems installed 10 years ago via life cycle replacement maintenance on numerous federal facilities that include over 200 units under a current prime contract, replacing 20 perimeter security systems per year of designated systems that have reached their end of life cycle.

Nasatka Security Vice President, Services Sales Tom Mullen, said, “We deploy teams globally to maintain and service barrier systems for numerous other manufacturers besides our own. We currently hold a nationwide contract for maintenance and service of barriers owned by a federal agency, in addition to other regional and site-specific contracts around the world.”

Nasatka Security Weighs in on the Cost of Perimeter Security at ISC West

April 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Among a crowd of 30,000 security experts and over 1,000 exhibiters presenting new products and technologies, 43-year-old Nasatka Security is discussing the fundamentals of perimeter security barriers for potential targets around the globe.

According to a security market analysis in January of 2017 by Grand View Research (GVR), the global perimeter security market is expected to reach USD 29.63 billion by 2025.

Nasatka’ s CEO John Scolaro said, “After terrorist vehicle attacks the past few years in Nice, BarcelonaNew YorkStockholmBerlin and London, we are putting our over 40 years’ experience to work supporting installations of our crash-rated solutions, as well as consulting with architects and engineers on optimal perimeter security designs. With new demand for crash-rated solutions in settings that haven’t previously hardened their perimeters, there is a lot of education to be done. We’re doing our best to help A&E firms produce effective perimeter security designs.”

The GVR analysis also noted that the access control systems segment is anticipated to witness growth owing to large-scale implementation at IT & Telecom organizations, registering a CAGR of 7.4% over the next eight years. Additionally, increasing cross-border terrorism has resulted in high investments in military and defense markets which captured a major market share in terms of revenue and is expected to reach USD 7,851.9 million by 2025.

Nasatka’ s Vice President of Service and Sales, Tom Mullen said, “We’re seeing a lot of inquiries from customers who traditionally needed to control crowds and vehicle traffic, but not protect their perimeters from a vehicle attack. An attacker isn’t going to heed signage or roadway markings, so it’s a completely different mindset. And, of course, it’s a completely different cost to harden a perimeter with crash-rated barrier solutions. That’s something we’re helping new customers plan for in their security plans going forward.”

A biproduct from the GVR analysis reports extreme technological advancements are leading to the development of smart buildings, smart infrastructures and smart cities. Owing to this, the implementation of security systems at commercial complexes, entertainment hubs, and public sites is on the rise. The integration of security systems with internet and the latest mobile devices has made surveillance easier; however, Scolaro added that advancements like autonomous driving and unmanned and inexpensive drones has complicated the risk factors for soft targets.

“We spend a great deal of time traveling the globe to consult on, maintain and install perimeter security systems. We anticipate a significant increase in the transportation end-use market; specifically, with airports, sea ports and railway stations. This jump is largely due to security breaches across territories. Additionally, the Asia Pacific region could see the quickest growth in the global perimeter security market,” Scolaro added.

For more information about Nasatka Security, please visit their website at www.nasatka.com or stop by Nasatka’ s booth #11144 at the ISC West Show in Las Vegas from April 11-13 at The Sands Expo.

Nasatka Security Focusing on Hardening “Soft” Targets at ASIS

Dallas, TX – (September 25, 2017) – Nasatka CEO John Scolaro and a team of perimeter security specialists will be exhibiting with a mobile barrier at the 63rd annual ASIS International Seminar and Exhibits from September 25-27 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas.

Vehicle attacks are unfortunately becoming a deadly trend all over the world, with terrorists no longer limiting their attacks to “hard targets” (military bases, embassies, federal buildings). Several recent attacks have hit “soft targets” (public buildings, parks, venues, streets), taking advantage of the lack of security measures in those traditionally safe environments.

This year alone, large pedestrian attacks have occurred in Stockholm, Sweden; Nice, France; London, England; and more recently in Charlottesville, Virginia. Nice was one of the deadliest with 84 people killed and over 200 injured when authorities said an Islamic State soldier used a 20-ton truck to strike hundreds of people. Large crowds had gathered in Nice to watch Bastille Day fireworks.

Scolaro also said, “The new threats have changed architectural security designs. We’ve come a long way from jersey walls, barbed wire, bars and other unattractive and ineffective deterrents. We’re now striving to provide the A & E market appealing elements that are either concealed when not in use or even enhance an aesthetically pleasing design. Over the past 18 months, we have seen an increase in those retractable and fixed bollards, wedge plate barriers and other crash-rated products that are both visually appealing to designers and provide higher levels of security to crowds.”

Nasatka Security, a 42-year-old perimeter security solutions provider, has seen an increase of design awareness and implementation from the architectural and engineering (A&E) market. The company has spent a significant amount of time with A & E firms providing educational opportunities to gain knowledge and a new understanding for perimeter security technologies and critical differentiators when seeking to protect “soft” targets within new designs.

Nasatka offers an AIA CES Approved Provider Course that educates and informs architects and engineers about multiple forms of physical security and how to choose the best solutions in various design environments. The course also instructs architects how to choose between wedge barriers, bollards, security gates, crash beams, and other crash-rated products given different environmental conditions and site-specific security procedures. Nasatka will educate and inform A & E on the differences between Independent Engineer Crash Ratings, In-House Vendor Crash Ratings, DOS (Department of State) crash certification and ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials) crash and penetration ratings. The course also discusses installing Crash Certified /Engineer Rated Active and Passive Vehicle Barriers when obstructions alter the installation requirements other than as crash tested and certified.

“We are committed to be an agent of change by continuing to educate and implement higher security standards that will harden “soft” targets against vehicle attacks,” Scolaro said.

Nasatka Vice President Global Services, Tom Mullen, said, “Nasatka produces American-made barriers and has installed and maintains thousands of wedge barriers, bollards and crash beams all over the world, protecting some of the most critical physical and personnel assets, including sports arenas, ports, airports, open mall areas, database centers, corporate headquarters and nuclear power plants.”

According to Mullen, Nasatka has engineered and crash tested-certified a complete array of Active Vehicle Barrier (AVB) and Passive Vehicle Barrier (PVB) versions of their Pop-Up Steel-Plate Barrier to meet the ASTM, Department of State and U.S. Army requirements for both crash and penetration ratings. And their versatile mobile barriers can be deployed and operational in less than 20 minutes, protecting targeted facilities, entry control points or special events. Nasatka’s mobile barrier systems require no surface, footing or barrier anchoring preparation. Nasatka’s mobile barriers are crash tested under the ASTM F2656-07 standard to stop a 15,000 lbs. vehicle at various impact speeds; crucial for “soft” target crowd protection while maintaining emergency response vehicle access-control.

Today more than ever, Nasatka’s barrier systems should be an integral part of any new or upgraded maximum-security plan. Whether the concern is thwarting terrorist vehicle attacks or simply prevention of unauthorized vehicle access, Nasatka’s Global Lines of Defense® protect some of the world’s greatest mission critical assets.

For more information about Nasatka Security, please stop by their booth #1000 at the 63rd annual ASIS International Seminar and Exhibits from September 25-27 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas.

Nasatka Security Sees Spike in Barriers with Increase in Vehicle Attacks

LAS VEGAS, April 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — At the ISC West Show today, Nasatka Security’s CEO John Scolaro said the 42-year-old perimeter security solutions provider is seeing the highest interest in perimeter security barrier systems since post 9/11.

Experts say attacks in which cars or trucks are driven into crowded pedestrian areas present a unique challenge for law enforcement officials as they are virtually impossible to predict and relatively easy to execute. They require no advanced training and no specialized materials. Almost anyone can own or rent a vehicle.

According to Scolaro, you won’t see many of Nasatka’s clients listed on their website, nor will you be able to read about case studies or see onsite installation photos of recognizable government buildings, large corporations or foreign embassies, even though Nasatka is an icon in the perimeter security industry with many active patents and thousands of perimeter security systems all over the world. “Safety for our clients, their employees and the public comes first and perimeter security details shouldn’t be available on the Internet for anyone to see; it’s irresponsible,” Scolaro added.

Two weeks ago, another vehicle was used as a weapon in London, leaving five dead and 40 injured. It was almost a year to the day since 85 died from injuries in the ISIS-inspired attack on Bastille Day in Nice, France. And according to Scolaro, these are merely the incidents being covered by the mainstream media. “It’s occurring daily all over the world…and we see it all. We have worked with the Department of Defense (DOD) and various branches of the U.S. Military by supplying, installing and maintaining both fixed and mobile barriers all over the world. We routinely see pictures of vehicles stopped and lives saved,” Scolaro said.

Charlie Winter, a senior research fellow at the London-based International Centre for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violence, says what makes such attacks so frightening is the relatively low barriers to entry. The method was embraced by al-Qaida before being revitalized by ISIS. “It makes for a very effective, unsophisticated, high impact, very frightening form of an operation,” he said.

Nasatka has spent over four decades understanding and mastering the science of perimeter security. And although nothing is 100 percent, Nasatka feels they make a significant difference for their clients’ protection.

“Strengthening your existing facility against bomb threats or vehicle attacks may seem like a tough feat and you can’t really change that protective shell by renovation alone, but you can modify the perimeter and the access control points by installing bollards and barriers to extend stand-off distances, in addition to increasing your security personnel to make your site a less inviting target, “Scolaro said.

Nasatka produces American-made barriers and has installed and maintains thousands of wedge barriers, bollards and crash beams all over the world, protecting some of the most critical assets, including airports, nuclear power plants and ports. Nasatka engineered three versions of their Pop-Up Steel-Plate Barrier to meet the Department of State and U.S. Army K12/L3 (15,000 pounds @ 50 mph) crash certifications. And Nasatka’s versatile mobile barriers can be deployed and operational in 12 minutes, protecting targeted facilities, entry control points or special events. There is no surface, footing or barrier anchoring preparation required. Nasatka’s mobile barriers are crash tested under the ASTM F2656-07 standard to stop a 15,000 lbs. vehicle at various impact speeds.

Nasatka’s National Sales Director, Dan Madden said, “Nasatka Steel-Plate Barriers are the most proven, tested and reliable vehicle-access control barrier system in the world. They are a perfect combination of engineering achievement, durability and security. Absolutely no substitute comes close to the advantages offered by Nasatka Security’s Steel-Plate Barrier Systems, bollards and crash beams.”

With the economy booming and populations increasing, Nasatka consultants have seen a decrease in the size of real estate land parcels and an increase in the height and vertical footprint of large, mixed-use residential and commercial buildings. Many are upwards of 50 stories, in addition to the first few stories reserved for parking. Add an increase in outdoor space with parks, outdoor venues and sport arenas and this is an area that needs great attention when planning for a safe future.

Nasatka’s Vice President of Services Sales, Tom Mullen said, “We have improved awareness and expertise on the design end over the past few years by offering A & E firms the ability to schedule a free “Lunch & Learn” vehicle barrier course (Crash-rated Vehicle Barriers in Your Design).  This AIA CES approved course was designed to educate A & E firms on perimeter security technologies and critical differentiators when designing a variety of installations. Architects who are members of AIA can earn one (1) learning unit towards their annual requirement for continuing education.

According to Mullen, Nasatka has also been focusing on preventative maintenance.  Nasatka currently has a nationwide maintenance contract that includes virtually all major barrier brands. “Critical infrastructure is invaluable for both government and private industry, especially given the current trend towards vehicle-based attacks.  Given new requirements, the architectural design and engineering (A&E) industry must focus on critical infrastructure security.  Perimeter security is an essential part of their designs now,” Mullen said.

Nasatka is a global maintenance provider in the U.S. with over 5,000 Global ACP Assets. It also delivers 24/7 global support and service on any make/model of barrier plates, bollards and crash beams.

“In today’s market, there are many important factors to include when developing a sensible solution for a security-driven design and construction process for both government and private enterprise, in and out of the United States.  Creating a comprehensive security plan is like starting any other business; you begin with senior management and a detailed facility security mission statement.  This process is unique to each integrator, but we focus on educating the client and/or designers on what technologies are state-of-the-art and how to use them in the security vulnerability assessment process,” Scolaro noted.
