Nasatka Security Celebrates 45 Years of Perimeter Security Solutions

CLINTON, Md. (Sept. 22, 2020) – In 1975, Army Korean War Veteran and successful businessman Ralph Nasatka had an idea that would mold the perimeter security business forever. Nasatka, founder of Nasatka Security, first started working in the business when the FBI put out a solicitation for an anti-ram vehicle barrier solution to protect its headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Fast-forward to 2020, with the increase in vehicle borne explosive and vehicle ramming terrorist attacks identified as both domestic and global, the demand for what was once to protect personnel and assets of Federal Government facilities, has become a staple for municipalities and critical infrastructure facilities. This includes database centers, corporate headquarters, and financial institutions, which have many of the same physical security measures as government buildings.

“Physical security plans were once a reactive measure to an identified threat, but now the global terrorist threat has caused this to be the norm rather than the exception,” said John Scolaro, CEO of Nasatka Security. “Physical security design is now standard and it is often necessary to comply with industry commercial and government security practices or to adopt to new practices and procedure guidelines to access-control/perimeter protection design.”

Having conducted the first steel-plate barrier crash test in the United States, Nasatka’s positive countermeasures of active vehicle barriers and passive vehicle barrier systems to mitigate the potential damage from a vehicle-borne explosive device, have been deployed at the many of the most secure sites in the world.

Nasatka’s solutions are designed primarily to control, detect, and where necessary, stop unauthorized vehicle and pedestrian threats. Nasatka’s business is a unique blend of physical and electronic security including; crash-tested active and passive vehicle and pedestrian barriers, crash-certified perimeter fencing, guard booths, and turnstiles. Nasatka provides design to sustainment services to include Custom Design Engineering, General Construction, and Contractual 24/7 Service and Maintenance programs for thousands of physical security assets throughout the United States and globe.

For 45 years, Nasatka Security’s physical security solutions have met the challenging mandates of today and tomorrow’s maximum-perimeter-vehicle-access-control security needs. Prior to the awakening events of 9/11 and the establishment of the Homeland Security Agency, Nasatka had been a leader in the innovation, manufacturing, installation, and services of vehicular access-control, perimeter security, and maximum-security system solutions. After 9/11, the demand for Nasatka’s business grew quickly.

Nasatka Security Continues Phase III Life Cycle Barrier Replacement Program at Legislative Washington, D.C. Branch

CHICAGOSept. 10, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Nasatka Security CEO John Scolaro announced today that the company was recently awarded Phase III of a barrier replacement program entering its third year, totaling over 60 barriers and assets in our nation’s capital.

Scolaro stated, “It’s a very quick turnaround period with our government agency clients when dealing with a barrier life cycle replacement program so not to impede existing traffic flow and site security; for this particular client, our window from removal to replacement is 72 hours or less. Considering the complexity of such a monumental number of barriers in such a close proximity, it can be a stressful and daunting task; however, with over 44 years of experience, we do whatever it takes to make it happen within our short time period; quickly and safely.”

According to Scolaro, most perimeter security solution providers have a preventative maintenance program for traditional wedge plate barriers, bollards, nets, gates, fencing access control points and mobile barriers. For high-volume use with large facilities like government agencies, airports, nuclear facilities, ports and various other secure environments, there needs to be a lifecycle management program to ensure optimal functionality and the strict crash rating compliance.

The crash ratings were developed in 1985 (revised in 2003) by the DOS, and more recently, further developed by American Society for Testing Methods (ASTM). The product is given a specific test certification based on vehicle weight, speed and distance of penetration. Whether it’s traditional wedge plate barrier or bollard, a successful lifecycle management program will identify current and future infrastructure needs, identify potential issues, risks and constraints and will allow providers to successfully rationalize impacts of various courses of action to deliver the greatest good for safety and design for the infrastructure and overall perimeter security.

According to Scolaro, Nasatka Security has been providing perimeter security solutions in and around Washington, D.C. for dozens of government agencies since its inception in 1975. Non-disclosure agreements and DOS/DOD privacy policies keep many of the organizations private to ensure maximum protection for all Nasatka Security’s clients.

“If you are walking around our nation’s capital and happen to see a wedge and/or bollard barrier pop-up, it’s highly likely we had something to do with the installation, maintenance, and/or its lifecycle replacement history,” Scolaro added.

Nasatka Security and Apex Fabrication & Design Announce Merger at ISC West

LAS VEGAS, April 9, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Nasatka Security CEO John F. Scolaro and Pennsylvania-based Apex Fabrication & Design President Jim Smith Jr. announced their merger today.

Scolaro said, “When Founder Ralph Nasatka, Sr., a Korean War Veteran, founded the company 44 years ago, he started a lifelong business relationship with Jim Smith, Sr., and the Smith family business. After 9/11, Nasatka’s business grew very quickly, and Jim Jr. stepped up to handle our steel fabrication needs by launching Apex Fabrication & Design in 2003. We have done a great deal of business together over the years, ranging from mobile and permanent crash-rated barriers, to rapid prototyping and crash tests. By merging our businesses, we will be one of the very few full-service perimeter security companies with a global presence that manufactures all of its own products in the USA.”

Smith, a veteran engineer and fabrication specialist, grew up around the fabrication shop created by his father out of a central Pennsylvania farm house during the early 70s, when wood burning stoves were in demand due to the gas crisis. Nasatka was one of Smith’s distributors, and the two companies went on to form a relationship that produced some of the very first patented perimeter barrier systems in the world.

Apex President Jim Smith, Jr., said, “We have come a long way from the days of Ralph and my dad paving the way with rapid protypes and patented barriers that helped shape an industry. It’s a wonderful feeling to work with a group of people for so long and trust them with your livelihood. To be able to merge together and take everything to another level is very exciting, for all of us!”
Apex was founded in 2003 by Jim Smith, Jr., to serve the needs of the transportation infrastructure industry. Smith and his team provided parts, components, and assembly services to OEMs whose products shipped worldwide. The 60,000- sq.-ft. facility has 18 work stations and is an industry leader in the design and the manufacture of active and passive vehicle barriers used to protect valuable infrastructure and assets. In addition, Apex is an AISC-certified steel fabricator providing a broad scope of custom metal fabrication services. This includes highway sign structures manufactured under the stringent guidelines of PennDOT’s Bulletin 15, Maryland State Highway Administration, North Carolina Department of Transportation, and other bordering states.

For over 40 years, Nasatka Security has met the evolving needs for vehicle access and perimeter security. Long before 9/11 and the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security, Nasatka had been a global leader in the innovation, manufacturing, installation, and maintenance service of vehicular access control and perimeter security system solutions. Nasatka’s corporate offices are in Clinton, Maryland, with sales and service locations throughout the USA and in the Middle East.

Nasatka installed the first steel plate “wedge” barrier in the United States (J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington, D.C.) in 1975 and conducted the first DOS steel-plate barrier crash test in the United States in 1985. Nasatka’s positive countermeasures, including active vehicle barriers (AVB) and passive vehicle barriers (PVB), mitigate the potential damage and loss of life associated with unauthorized vehicle access, including vehicle-borne explosive devices, vehicle attacks on pedestrians, commercial theft, and accidental breaches of secured perimeters. Nasatka’s solutions are deployed at many of the most highly-secured sites in the world. Our solutions are designed primarily to control, detect, and where necessary, stop unauthorized vehicle and pedestrian threats.

“Nasatka’s business is a unique blend of physical and electronic security including crash-tested active and passive (fixed and mobile) vehicle and pedestrian barriers, bollards, and guard booths. Nasatka provides design-to-sustainment services to include: custom design engineering, general construction, and contractual 24/7 service and maintenance programs for thousands of physical security assets throughout the continental United States and around the world,” Scolaro said.

Nasatka Security Answers Spike in Demand with Robust Line of Bollards at GSX in Vegas

Las Vegas, Nev. – (September 28, 2018) – Nasatka Security featured their extensive line of fixed and retractable crash-rated bollards at the Global Security Exchange (GSX), formerly the Annual Seminar & Exhibits, in Las Vegas this week.

Nasatka CEO John Scolaro said, “In 1975, Founder Ralph Nasatka, a Korean War Veteran, developed original, patented design for his first American-made, K12 crash-tested steel plate wedge barrier, which was installed in the Washington, DC metro area. Today, Nasatka Security is an experienced global perimeter specialist manufacturing, installing and maintaining a wide variety of active and passive vehicle barriers all over the globe. This year at GSX we spoke more on our full line of crash-rated fixed, removable and retractable bollards.”

According to Scolaro, there has been a drastic increase in “soft targeting” crowds in public and common areas over the past few years and Nasatka has seen a dramatic increase in requests from architectural and engineering (A&E) firms, especially specification requests for large scale bollard implementations. The increase in interest in deep and shallow foundation fixed, removable and retractable bollards has been significant for sport stadiums, municipalities, corporate campuses, and large parks and recreation centers.

Many perimeter security companies only offer one or two types of fixed and retractable bollards. Nasatka has an extensive line of crash-rated bollard designs to assist A&E firms in designing perimeter security plans, especially for existing urban settings where underground utilities and other space challenges make crash-rated barrier and bollard foundations a challenge.

In addition to their core products of steel plate barriers, bollards, drop arms and sliding gates, Nasatka recently completed a large U. S. Army order of mobile barriers to enhance the security needs in various Middle East theatre regions and in support of Iraq Defense and Police security needs.

In the Washington D.C. region, Nasatka is actively upgrading perimeter security systems installed 10 years ago via life cycle replacement maintenance on numerous federal facilities that include over 200 units under a current prime contract, replacing 20 perimeter security systems per year of designated systems that have reached their end of life cycle.

Nasatka Security Vice President, Services Sales Tom Mullen, said, “We deploy teams globally to maintain and service barrier systems for numerous other manufacturers besides our own. We currently hold a nationwide contract for maintenance and service of barriers owned by a federal agency, in addition to other regional and site-specific contracts around the world.”
